I've got a Bart's PE disk too - can I use that to force XP to reload the factory USB drivers in some way?

Boot off of your trusty Bart's PE Builder CD-ROM, run "Registry Editor PE v1.0a", and edit the registry for your downed Windows XP system.

Click it, and browse to a location where the disk controller’s driver can be found, such as a UFD, CD, or floppy disk.

Once the driver has been installed and the system has detected the hard disk, you can proceed with the installation.
